Winter Program 2018
After attending the 2018 Winter Program, Siyam wrote, “ALIM’s scholarship is bar none the most thought provoking Muslim scholarship I have been blessed to benefit from. I firmly believe that the thought leadership and insightful critical thinking that is produced from ALIM is quintessential for the growth and preservation of Islam in America.
The winter program demonstrated the authenticity of scholars I already had had a deep level of respect for, their accessibility and laid back presence combined with the intellectually stimulating content made for an experience that is uniquely beneficial. The presence of organizers and community leaders further enhanced the collaboration and thought exchange that is prudent for healthy community building.”

Are the Scholars out of Touch?
Tradition’s Role Today
The old sectarian feuds in our community about where God is and what day one celebrates Eid have given way to a new conversation: Are you progressive or traditional? Do you find the notion of Islamic tradition being subjected to higher criticism preposterous or reasonable? Do you believe transcendence entails finding scriptural precedent for every contemporary reality–perhaps to the point of superimposition? Unsurprisingly, Islamic scholars with their training, texts, madhhabs and ancient institutional affiliations are still seen as the representatives of a traditional, trans-historical Islam.
This Winter Program will explore how this tradition is relevant today and investigates the roles and responsibilities of the many interest groups in our community (scholars, imams, activists, and lay-Muslims). And so we ask, “What is the relationship between these different exponents of Islam?”

What is the ALIM Winter Program?
The American Learning Institute for Muslims Winter Program is a 3-day intensive study of one of many traditional Islamic sciences in the context of the modern American paradigm. The Winter Program was designed to meet the apparent need for a shorter intensive program focused on specialized themes. This program targets those who cannot make the month long Summer Program because of the time commitment and those alumni who want more exposure to the ALIM learning philosophy throughout the year. This program rotates across the United States.
Note: ALIM works hard to make all of its programs affordable. Please support by donating here.
